Ways To Get Involved

Chai Society

The Chai Society is an informal social group that is open to all SHM members and targets specifically our senior community. Programs are designed by members and revolve around Jewish holiday celebrations, lunches, lectures, and ongoing learning. We welcome you to join us at our next event!

Shavuot Celebration
Saturday, May 26
Yizkor Service at 6:30 pm/Shavuot Program at 7:00 pm

According to tradition it was on Shavuot that Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. To observe this occasion, the Kabbalists would stay up all night learning, studying and celebrating this wonderful revelation of the Jewish people. This event for the entire congregation is a chance to study with many different teachers about relevant and real issues of the soul, spirit and mind.

Chavurot

Chavurah, Hebrew for friendship group, enables the members of our Congregation to get acquainted in smaller, more intimate groups based upon compatible needs and interests. Consisting of 7-12 households, singles, couples, and/or families, these groups meet regularly for socializing and planning religious, educational, or cultural activities. We are pleased to offer special interest Chavurot: Wine Appreciation and Singles Only. Contact Carole Frankel at carole444@aol.com for more information

Chesed

Our Chesed Committee is the soul of our Congregation.  This committee focuses on the needs of our congregants in times of joy and of difficulty.  When a baby is born, Chesed responds.  When  a loved one dies, Chesed is there.  When one needs a ride to services, Chesed is there. If you would like to volunteer with this special group of people contact Laura Van de Merghel at laura@kuci.org or Danny Saffer at danny.saffer@gmail.com for more information.

The Rosh Chodesh Womens' Circle with Marcie Howard
Monthly at 7:00 pm

Celebrating the New Moon, the Rosh Chodesh Womens' Circle will gather on a monthly basis, on various dates, to celebrate the special and precious energies of each new approaching Hebrew month.
Rosh Chodesh falls at the time of the darkest cycle of the moon when just a sliver shines in the sky. It is a wonderful time to renew and refresh. Affirm new beginnings and honor this ancient tribal ritual with song and chanting Niggunim, meditation, creative and expressive art, story telling, learning and sharing. This is a heart-centered gathering, which invites and welcomes yourparticipation. Please join us as we celebrate Rosh Chodesh in precious and sweet ways.

Mah Jongg Group
Mondays at 9:30 am

The sound of clacking tiles is punctuated by laughter on Monday mornings at Temple, where a group gathers weekly to play mah-jongg. This group is a great way to meet people and enjoy a morning with fellow congregants who are also avid mah-jongg fans.

Bridge Group

Tuesdays at 1:00 pm

Let's play bridge and make connections. NaSHiM is forming bridge groups to play weekly at temple. Contact Joy LePatner at lepatner@roadrunner.com for more information and to sign up to play.

Knitting Group
Tuesdays at 10:30 am

Shir Crafters is a group of temple women who work as a team to assemble knitted 7”x 9” rectangles into beautiful, one of a kind, afghans that any child who is in the hospital facing an illness would love to cuddle. The completed afghans are donated to CHOC each year. The group is open to all knitters at any level.

SHM Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a great way for the men of Shir Ha-Ma’alot to socialize and to get involved in the life of the Temple. We host social activities like poker night, billiards tournaments, and parties for watching important sporting events. Not to be overlooked is our spirit of volunteerism as the Brotherhood takes charge of the bagel sales every Sunday during religious school. All proceeds go to supporting Brotherhood activities, Temple programming, and scholarships.
Activities are usually held the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm

  •  Game Night: May 10
  • Family Camping Trip: August 17-19

SHM Women (NaSHiM)

NaSHiM provides an opportunity for women to connect with each other and our congregation. There are countless ways to get involved in educational, ritual, social, social justice programming, as well as bridge and mah jongg games.
