Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Program

SHM families and friends can donate gift certificates and money throughout the year for food for the hungry and college or camp scholarships for needy students. SHM families can also be matched with families in Orange County to develop a bond for a lifetime.

Spread the Warmth! New and/or cleaned, gently used sleeping bags can be donated all year long. These are given to families that are sleeping on the floor in apartments that they share with others. Throughout the year, gently used goods are collected and distributed to families in need. Contact Barbara King directly at frombking@cox.net for donation opportunities.

There will be three major projects and the ongoing partnership throughout the year. The Thanksgiving meal program provides a week’s worth of groceries to the poorest working families in Orange County. The Christmas and Chanukah drives ensure that a family can provide new holiday gifts for each of their loved ones. The Passover program provides kosher for Passover food to Jewish families who could not afford it otherwise. These drives make miracles happen! Thanksgiving Food Drive

Sunday, November 19th,

10:00 am–1:00 pm

Each year Shir Ha-Ma’alot collects food for families throughout Orange County through our synagogue Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Program. The families chosen for this program are  among the poorest of the working poor. This project helps fill a desperate need. Watch for details in the Ma’alot newsletter.

Chanukah & Christmas Gift Drive
Sunday, December 17th,

10:00 am–1:00 pm

SHM participates in the Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Program for the Holidays by helping needy families celebrate Christmas. You will be given a choice of families to “adopt” along with their “wish list” of household needs. We also partner with Jewish Family Services to assist needy families at Chanukah. Donations of gift cards, cash or checks will go far in helping families in need.

Passover Gift Card Drive
Deadline is Sunday, March 18th,

11:00 am–12:00 pm

Please join us in helping needy Jewish families celebrate Passover by donating grocery store gift cards, cash or checks. All donations are tax deductible. Passover food donations are welcome too!

The Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Story

This program is dedicated to the memory of Jessica Herron, daughter of Dana Klein and Jay Herron, who lost her life in a traffic accident in October 2005. Jessica had a lifelong history of caring about the needs of others. She volunteered at Share Our Selves, helping with the Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives, delivered for Meals on Wheels for six summers, and worked the finish line for the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” among many other projects. Barbara and Rabbi Bernie King chose to rename SHM’s Inner-City Partnership Program in Jessica’s memory to honor her love for helping others.
