Accessible Congregation

Congregation Shir Ha-Ma'alot recognizes that every human being is created in God's image. Our community strives to emulate that Holy Reflection. We teach that everyone is special and has something unique to offer our community. In so teaching, we strive to further deepen our relationships to each other, to our community and to the Eternal One.

SHM strives to be a synagogue of inclusion. Our clergy is active in many community programs for people with special needs including; The Jeremiah Society, Brit Tikvah Support Group for Parents of Children with Special Needs, and Mandel House to name a few. Our temple was named an Accessible Congregation by the National Organization on Disability. We are acknowledged as a congregation where people with disabilities are valued as individuals, and where people, with and without disabilities, are encouraged to practice their faith and use their gifts in worship, service, study and leadership.

This congregation is endeavoring to remove barriers of architecture, communications and attitude that exclude people with disabilities from full and active participation:

  • Wheelchair access to all services and events at the temple
  • Headsets for the hearing impaired (available upon request)
  • Special needs program for our religious school students
  • Brit Tikvah: support group for families of children with special needs
  • Special Shabbat Service and events each February in recognition of Jewish Disability Awareness Month
