SHM in the News- Introducing Hebrew in Harmony!

Five years ago, Shir Hama'alot in Irvine, California, experimented with its Hebrew program by creating small, chavura-style learning groups. Intended as a way to build community, similar to the school's format for Judaica learning, the Hebrew program simply didn't work out as planned.

The congregation's religious school Principal Heather Rosenthal and Rabbi Leah Lewis, director of life-long learning, realized they needed to make a change. They first showed the education committee that, for a variety of reasons, the small-group format was not working to meet the community goals, and proposed returning to Hebrew learning by class level. Religious School Principal:

Heather Rosenthal

Heather joined our Religious School staff in the summer of 2015, but before this, she worked in our school as a Judaica teacher in 4th grade. She has 10 years of teaching experience, a Bachelors and Masters in Educational Administration from CSULB and has been a congregant since 2012. She is a member of SHM with her husband, Geoff, and their two children, Jacob and Chloe.

Office Manager:

Kat Key

Kat joined our synagogue in 2014 as a vital member of the staff. She attended Biola University with a major in English and Cultural Anthropology. Before this position, Kat was an Office Manager at a local non-profit. She and her husband, Andrew, call Irvine their home.

Youth Programs Coordinator:

Mai Gattenyo

Mai joined our religious school staff in the summer of 2018. Prior to this, she taught 6th grade Hebrew & Nature studies in our religious school, and before that she lived and volunteered in Israel as a participant in Project Ten.  She holds a B.A in Strategic and Corporate Communication, and is currently pursuing her M.A in Leadership Development also at Chapman University.
